Archaeological Park of Dometaia

Archaeological Park of Dometaia

Dometaia is an area in the municipality of Colle di Val d’Elsa. It is 5 min. drive out of the center.

The first excavations date back to the nineteenth century, later more accurate research from 1972 and 2010 led to the discovery of 56 tombs distributed over a period of time between the middle of the sixth century B.C. and the first years of the second century A.D.

The types of tombs range from noble with complex-plan rooms to more modest structures.

Most of the artifacts found are kept in the “Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli” Archaeological Museum in Colle di Val d’Elsa and in the National Archaeological Museum of Siena (Chigi Zondadari Collection).

Educational workshops held on site give the opportunity to spend the day in the park with simulated archaeological excavations, the study of the landscape and the working of clay.
